A call for help

March 30, 2009

Warning: The following has nothing, I repeat nothing, to do with youth sports.

I’ve been asked to help compile entries for our annual profile of what people earn here in the region.

I’d really like to do this without calling random people. So I thought I’d solicit people here on the site who want to participate.

It’s really not that complicated. In fact, here’s a sample from last year:

$18,000
Shannon Clifton, 39
Receptionist
Clifton’s biggest challenge these days is taking care of her family while filling up her SUV at the same time. “I’d get something smaller, but there’s no trade-in value for big vehicles,” she said. To get by, she’s cutting back on frills. “I don’t eat out much, and stay at home,” she said.

See, that’s it. Piece of cake.

Want to help me out? Send me an e-mail to cappsr@fayobserver.com if you’d like to participate.

We now return you to regularly scheduled youth sports programming…

Pulling no punches

March 27, 2009

I spent an hour or so watching a few young men in Hope Mills train for an upcoming Sandspur story about a youth boxer.

Naturally, I brought along my surprisingly cooperative video camera and took a few shots.

For clarity’s sake, the man in red is Eddie Nazario. The boxer in black is Angel Perez, the larger fighter is Alex Teixdor and the other one is Karlos Briales.

The story is slated to appear in the April 8 edition.

Until then, enjoy…

Southern Dance X’treme team shines in Raleigh

March 25, 2009

Dance team 1Dance team 2

Thanks to Lisa Raper for sending this in.

At the top is a picture of the “Combat” tap team in action. Next is a shot of the “Wild Child” team members, from the bottom left and clockwise: Lauren Reames, Alexis Baldwin, Avery Pope, Jacquelyn McGaha, Courtney Davis, Jacqueline Kate Pope, Aryan Davenport and Haley Raper.

These girls tried out last summer and earned a place on the competition team “Southern Dance X’treme” competition team. They practice four nights a week at the World of Dance Studio and have been rehearsing since July of last year to prepare the competitions.

Their dance teachers are studio owner Ms. Courtney Bill along with the wonderful Mrs. Elina and Ms. Taylor.

We attended our first competition last weekend in Raleigh (Encore DCS) and the girls placed well:

Real Wild Child/Jazz – 1st Place in JAZZ catagory, 1st Place overall and the dance teacher Ms Courtney was also awarded most entertaining choreography of the day for that dance.

Combat/Tap – Placed 1st in TAP catagory and 3rd overall.

Rain/Lyrical – 1st in catagory

They will be attending their second competition the first weekend in April in Charleston, S.C.

Girls’ hockey team picks up honors

Junior Hurricanes

Thanks to my colleague, Diane Cain, for bringing this to my attention…

The U14 Junior Hurricanes finished atop the Capital Beltway Hockey League standings in the 2008-2009 campaign. In addition, the team brought home the championship medals for the postseason as well.

This would remarkable enough by itself, but the face that the Junior Hurricanes did it in a U16 league – because there wasn’t a U14 league in which they could play – makes it even more special.

On top of dominating in league play, the squad also won the President’s Day Classic in Philadelphia and the 6th Annual Ponytail Tournament in Baltimore while competing against teams from Canada, Nashville, Columbus, Kentucky, Chevy Chase, Richmond, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – just to name a few.

The team features players from Raleigh, Charlotte, Mebane and Fayetteville, with the two local representatives being defender Laura Wargny and goalie Caitlyn Cain.
