Max Abbott wins county title

ms soccer

Hats off to the girls at Max Abbott Middle School for capping a perfect regular season with the county middle school soccer championship with Tuesday’s 4-0 victory at Anne Chestnut.

Alexis Zeller-Meyer scored a brace while Rebecca Anchevico and Taylor Petroski also added a goal and an assist each. For Petroski, it was a school-record season. Her 26 goals smashed the old mark of 21, held by Terry Sanford alum and current LSU striker Rachel Yepez.

Alyssa McCray stood out for the Hornets in defeat, creating chances from the forward position in the first half and putting in a good shift in goal in the second.

Both coaches got ice baths after the match. The winning coach, Max Abbott’s Danny Hagans probably got the most ice, but his counterpart, Charles Gambrell, got the odd combination of ice and silly string.

What I liked best was the spirit and attitudes of both teams. The Panthers were gracious in victory while Anne Chestnut celebrated the first unbeaten regular season and Division II soccer crown in school history.

And I managed to avoid any stray celebratory ice, which is always a good thing.

Of course, I have some goodies to share:

Here are a few pictures.

I also posted the interviews I did with the two coaches below:
