Cape Fear Youth Hockey Association update

November 23, 2009

From our friend J. Freeman…

Saturday turned out to be a huge day for the teams of the Cape Fear Youth Hockey Association. Four teams were in action – the Mites (7 and 8 year olds) were down in Charleston, S.C., for athe first of three weekend games; the Squirts (9-10) were in Greensboro to take on the Stars; the Bantams (13-14) travelled to Winston-Salem to battle the Hampton Roads (VA) Whalers; and the High School team (U-16) made the trip up I-95 to take on Broughton High School.

Three teams have scored victories on this action-packed day. The Mites took down the Charlotte Checkers in a rout, 15-1. Scoring came early and often after the first goal was netted early in the 1st period. Several players had multiple points  (goals and assists) when it was all said and done. Forward Chase Wendolek netted a hat trick, while goalie Logan Brodsky came just minutes away from a shut-out.

The Stedman Knights defeated the Stoney Point Fire, 1-0, in the U10 age division and this was a great defensive game at Arnette Park.

The Stedman Futboleros defeated the Lake Rim Lightning, 1-0, in the U14 age division in another great defensive matchup at John Griffin Middle School.

Tonight, the U12 championship is scheduled at Arnette Park at 6 if weather permits, and this matchup is between the Grays Creek Darth Vador and the Lake Rim United.

Saturday morning playoff action

November 21, 2009

It’s Saturday, so it must be time for some more youth sports action.

Don’t forget that there’s wrestling going on over at the Crown today as well.

My travels this morning took me to Arnette Park for a little soccer and to Westover for as much football as my limited battery capacity would allow.

Well, here’s a photo gallery.

And there was going to be some video, but after almost two hours worth of rendering, it crashed.

So, we’ll give it another go on Monday…

Crossovers claim tournament title

November 17, 2009

Team

From Julie Cooke…

On Saturday, Nov. 14, a team of players from the John D. Fuller Sr. Recreational/Athletic Complex Fall Adult Basketball League was picked to play on a traveling team called the Fayetteville Crossovers. This team consists of 12 outstanding players from that league.

The Fayetteville Crossovers, coached by Patrick Dupree, played in a tournament at the Old Midway High School in Dunn on Saturday and won the tournament championship. This tournament featured 8 teams from Clinton, Dunn and Elizabethtown.

This team’s sizzling performance had teams on their toes throughout the tournament. The team has 12 power house basketball players that would stand out in any gym, but it must be said that rookie Jaysaun Hands had seven contested SUPER DUNKS in one game, all worthy of front-cover magazine shots.

This team will be playing in a tournament in Elizabethtown this Saturday and is expected to play in tournaments around surrounding cities and states.

Anyone with any information about upcoming tournaments or looking to scrimmage against this team, please contact Patrick Dupree at (910) 868-2828 ext 224.
