Sea Dragons update

December 21, 2009

From our friend Jon Meier…

The Fayetteville YMCA Sea Dragons wrapped up their 2009 year of competition with London Schumcher competing at the USA Swimming Junior National Championships in Columbus Ohio from Dec. 10-12. London finished the meet with 3 best time in 4 events that she entered. Her times leave her ranked No. 1 in North Carolina for 13 year old girls in the 500 yard freestyle and 200 yard butterfly. Complete results of the championships can be found here.

The rest of the Sea Dragons capped off their 2009 at three different swim meets from Dec. 4-12. Six Sea Dragons (Schumacher, Nicole Tronolone, Dustin Dyer, Connor Johnson, Thomas Cameron and Alex Johnson) competed at the 2009 Capital Classic Meet at Pullen Park. The Capital Classic includes some of the best YMCA swimmers from the east coast. Highlighting the meet was a 2nd place finish in the mile freestyle and a 3rd place finish in the 500 yard freestyle by Tronolone. Complete results can be found here.

Five other Sea Dragons (Elizabeth Baker, Lianan Bailey, Kiana Schumacher, Charlotte Broadwell and Alexis Bailey) represented the team at the 2009 WAVE Fall Classic 12 and under championships. Each of the five swimmers recorded best times during the three day event. Complete results can be found here.

Five other Sea Dragons (Kaitlin Tanguay, Devin Dyer, Joanna Lewis, Lynae Hill and Maria McGuire) took their talents to the Rocky Mount Y Racin Rudolph Invitational. Highlighting this meet was Lewis earning a 2nd place in the Girls open 100 Freestyle. Complete results can be found here.

Winter Softball Clinic

December 21, 2009

From our friend at Campbell…

Campbell University will offer a winter softball clinic for girls in the local community. The clinic, open to girls ages 8-18, will be held Saturday, Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Willard Harris hitting facility on the Buies Creek campus.

The event will consist of three sessions: a defensive clinic, hitting clinic and pitching clinic, grouped by age. Participants can take part in one, two or all three sessions. Girls will get the chance to meet the Campbell players and learn new skills from the college team.

This is a great way to kick start a softball player’s 2010 season with instruction that will help build her confidence and understanding in the game.

To register, go to http://www.gocamels.com and click on “Camps”. The cost is $35-$50 per session.

Youth football update

December 14, 2009

Myers Lions

I spent the weekend sick in bed, but our friend Robert Corzette passes on the following…

Congratulations to the Myers Lions football teams for winning the 9-10 and 11-12 football championships. A big thanks also to Dave Eavenson and Methodist University for allowing Fayetteville Cumberland Parks and Recreation to host the football championships in their beautiful football stadium.

And so, another youth football season fades into history. If anyone has a good trophy picture of the two Lions’ teams, I’d love to be able to post it here. Send it to me at cappsr@fayobserver.com.
