Junior Dixie Boys World Series – Day 3

August 3, 2009

REFRESH OFTEN FOR THE LATEST!!

10:58 a.m. – We’re semi-live once again as Hope Mills is set to do battle with West Volusia, Fla., this morning in Alabama. Of course, I can’t reach my friend Maxey Dove on the cellphone, so we’re not exactly off to a flying start this morning…

11:02 a.m. – I know one thing, it’s dry in Alabama this morning. So at least weather won’t be an issue.

11:11 a.m. – I’ve heard this is a good time to make wishes. I’ve got one. I won’t tell you, because it might not come true. But if you guessed that I might be wanting my phone to ring you wouldn’t be far off…

11:17 a.m. – I called Ricky Adams, the guy who’s writing stuff for us in Alabama and he reports that Hope Mills and Florida are tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

11:24 a.m. – Maxey had his ringer turned off. But he says that Florida has runners on first and second with one down in the top of the second inning. The score is still 1-1.

11:37 a.m. – Florida put up a three-spot in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Hope Mills is coming to bat in the bottom of the second. Maxey also said that, despite the fact that he’s a long way from home, poor and roaming, he’d keep sending me updates and you guys should keep it here. … Free advertising. Gotta love it.

11:54 a.m. – A long time between updates could be good. Maybe Hope Mills is scoring lots of runs…

11:57 a.m. – On the other hand, it could be bad news… It’s now 6-1, Florida, heading into the fourth inning.

12:18 p.m. – Florida is pouring it on now. It’s 12-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

12:36 p.m. – Florida leads it 14-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Hope Mills must score three to avoid losing by the 10-run mercy rule. I’m not prone to abject negativity, but this isn’t looking too good.

12:46 p.m. – Florida wins it 14-1 in five innings. A great season for the kids, but today wasn’t their day…

Junior Dixie Boys World Series – Let’s play two

August 3, 2009

In true Ernie Banks style, the Hope Mills Junior Dixie Boys hope they’ll be playing a doubleheader today/tonight in Enterprise, Ala.

The first hurdle arrives at 11 a.m. (our time) against West Volusia, Fla. Should they get a victory in that game, an 8 p.m. date with the winner of the Halifax County, Va., and Monroe, La., game, which is also at 11 a.m.

Join me right here for the best updates my cellphone plan can provide, starting at around 11 a.m. – weather permitting, of course.

So, let’s have a series reset:

Junior Dixie Boys World Series – Day 2 live

August 2, 2009

REFRESH OFTEN FOR THE LATEST!!!

5:03 p.m. – Well, Mother Nature continues to flex her muscle in Enterprise, Ala.

After a deluge pounded the fields at the Enterprise Recreational Complex, the scheduled game between Hope Mills and Dyersburg, Tenn., will be delayed for at least an hour.

Maxey Dove, who tells me he’s in sunglasses now, promises to let me know when there’s more to report…

5:23 p.m. – The announcement is that the game is now slated for 6:30 p.m. (our time).

6:37 p.m. – Apparently, that’s 7:30 p.m. our time…

7:43 p.m. – We’ve got radio silence from our contact in Enterprise. Either it’s raining too hard for him to answer it, or he doesn’t like me anymore. Either is equally possible.

7:48 p.m. – The teams are on the field for warmups. About 10 or 15 minutes away from baseball. A spot of bad news though – Tennessee is the home team.

8:37 p.m. – It’s 10-1 in the top of the second inning after Hope Mills storms out with a 10-run first to blow the game wide open. Great start for Hope Mills.

8:52 p.m. – It’s nice that we have good news to report. It’s also nice that we probably won’t be waiting until 1:30 a.m. for tonight’s result.

9:05 p.m. – It’s 15-1, Hope Mills, in the bottom of the third inning. And, Tessa, Maxey says he thinks that Troy Cain is 2-for-2 in the game. He also reports that Clay Ewing is looking strong on the mound and the entire team is “crushing the ball.”

9:09 p.m. – Tim, aside from this site, I don’t know of anywhere you can find out anything about the game. I was hoping that JockJive was going to do a radio broadcast from there, but it apparently fell through…

9:27 p.m. – It’s 18-1 heading into the top of the fifth. Just in case you’re wondering, the mercy rule is 10 runs after five innings. So, barring a big time Dyersburg rally, we’re going to have a winner in this one soon.

9:29 p.m. – For those asking for stats, I don’t have any. I’m hoping to have a few a little later, if Maxey can get a hold of the scorebook for me. We will have a story in tomorrow’s edition from Ricky Adams, so that will likely contain a few more details of what’s looking like an easy Hope Mills victory.

9:52 p.m. – It’s a final. Hope Mills wins it 18-3 in five innings. The other early games have gone final as well, as West Volusia, Fla., beat the hosts, Enterprise, Ala., 8-0 and Laurel-Jones County, Miss., tripped Searcy, Ark., 5-2. For you Troy Cain fans out there, he was 3-for-4 in the game. And to answer another query, there were no homers from North Carolina. Just lots of singles and doubles.

Hope Mills plays Florida tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. (our time). Check back with us then, as we’ll be trying once again to bridge the divide between Alabama and eastern North Carolina via cellphone technology.

Junior World Series updates

August 1, 2009

REFRESH OFTEN FOR THE LATEST!

7:20 p.m. – OK, first of all, the game was scheduled for 7 p.m. Central, which is 8 p.m. our time. So, in a perfect world, we’d still be about 30 minutes from first pitch. Plus, because of rainy weather, the tournament is about two hours behind schedule. So, hang tight.

It might be a while…

9:55 p.m. – They’re in a lightning/rain delay in Alabama, and two of the 4 p.m. games are still in progress. Troup County, Ga., is the only team who has wrapped up a win today, claiming a 3-2 victory over Dyersburg, Tenn. Monroe, La., and Laurel-Jones County, Miss., are tied at 3-3 in the sixth inning and Troy, Ala., is holding a 13-4, sixth-inning lead over Searcy, Ark.

Maxey Dove, who graciously agreed to keep me posted via cell phone, isn’t sure if the 7 p.m. (Central) games will get on tonight. We’ll see…

10:41 p.m. – The rain has let up in Alabama, and Troy celebrated by polishing off Searcy, 14-4, in six innings. Laurel-Jones County and Monroe are still tied at three in the sixth inning – and that field is the one that Hope Mills and Halifax County, Va., are slated to play on. They’re obviously planning to play tonight, so keep it here…

11:47 p.m. – Tommy McMaster doubled in Russell Anderson in the top of the first to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead. Virginia is now batting in the bottom of the second.

11:57 p.m. – Virginia scored a pair in the home half of the second to take a 2-1 lead. North Carolina has runners on second and third in the top of the third with nobody out and the top of the lineup coming to the plate.

12:07 a.m. – North Carolna has tallied four runs so far in the third inning to retake the lead at 5-2. The Hope Mills squad is still batting with two on and one out.

12:25 a.m. – N.C. added another run in the top of the third to go up 6-2, but Virginia smacks a two-run homer in the bottom half of the third, and heading into the fourth inning, it’s 6-4.

12:57 a.m – Virginia loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth, but North Carolina got a strike out followed by a line out to short which turned into a double play when the base runner strayed too far off base. No runs score. It’s now 6-4 in the top of the sixth.

1:21 a.m. – Hang in there, Tessa. I don’t think it’s over yet…

1:22 a.m. – It’s the bottom of the seventh, Hope Mills leads 7-4. Virginia has the bases loaded with one out…

1:28 a.m. – Virginia rallies for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 win. It’s a tough loss for Hope Mills, but they won’t have much time to fret about it, as they’ll face Dyersburg, Tenn., in about 15-and-a-half hours in an elimination game.

Here are the day’s scores:

Monroe, La. 6, Laurel-Jones County 3

Troy, Ala. 14, Searcy, Ark. 4

Troup County, Ga. 3, Dyersburg, Tenn 2

Halifax County, Va. 8, Hope Mills 7

Sumter, S.C. 1, West Volusia, Fla. 0

Texarkana, Texas 16, Enterprise, Ala. 6
