SQUIRTS (3-1-0, 6 points, won Championship for 3rd Straight year, defeated Winston Salem, 3-1)

Squirts started the tournament off slowly with a loss to the ever pesky Winston-Salem Ice Hawks. While leading the whole game, the Jr. Fireantz couldn’t handle the pressure of the Ice Hawk offense and ended up with a 4-1 loss.

Saturday’s early morning start to the day brought a good breakfast and a 9-0 win against the Charlotte Flames. Sunday morning brought another victory for the Squirts with a 9-1 win against the Charleston Stingrays. This win allowed the Squirts to meet up with the Ice Hawks for the championship.

While the Squirts had lost both previous games against the Ice Hawks, coaches were certain that a change was in order. Forwards Christian Roble and Alex Eichacker were pushed back to defense and goalie Nolean Parrent was pulled from goal to beef up the defense as well. The change proved to be too much for the Ice Hawks as the more powerful defense allowed the Squirts to set up many scoring chances.

While the offense, led by Michael Fogarty, Brock McNeely, and brothers Ben and Jacob Tobey, provided the needed firepower to win each of the games, this game’s defensive change led by Captain Shawn Herlihy, and Alternate Captains Nolean Parrent and Christian Roble created a force too powerful for the IceHawks to defend. Eric Grigoleit, Cameron Congswell, Matt McLamb and Hunter Millard provided the additional support to hold off the IceHawks charge. The Squirts took a 3-1 victory to secure their 3rd straight Golden Puck Tournament title.

Stats for the Golden Puck

Player Stats: Michael Fogarty, 7 points (3 G, 4 A); Shawn Herlihy, 6 (3,3); Brock McNeely, 3 (3,0); Christian Roble, 6 (3,3); Noelan Parrent, 2 (2,0); Ben Tobey, 4 (2,2); Jacob Tobey, 3 (2,1); Alex Eichacker, 4 (1,3); Eric Grigoleit, 3 (1,2); Matt McLamb, 3 (1,2); Cameron Cogswell, 1 (0,1)

PEE WEE (3-1-0, 6 points, lost in semi-finals to Greensboro Stars, 3-2; finished 3rd)

The 12U PeeWee Jr. Fireantz team swept their round robin games 7-1, 5-1 and 10-1 before heading to the semi-final round – a hard fought battle that ended with a 3-2 loss to the Greensboro Stars.

Ryan Graham, the team’s goalie, held other teams to only 5 goals the whole weekend. Every player on the team contributed with points (either a goal or assist):

Anthony Lane- 8: 6-g, 2-a Alex McLamb-4: 2-g, 2-a. Daniel Kaminski – 5: 2-g, 3-a. Vincent Luna-1: 1-g,0-a

Dylan Mead- 8: 3-g, 5-a Brenden Atherton-3: 3-g Michael Dennis-1: 1-a

Hunter Phillips – 6: 4-g, 2-a Duncan Adams-3: 2-g, 1-a Noah Allen – 6: 2-g, 4-a

BANTAM (1-3-0, 2 points, finished 3RD, lost in semifinals, 1-0 to Duluth Jr. Thrashers)

After losing first two games 5-0 and 3-2, the bantam team bounced back with a win against Charleston 6-0 to qualify for the semifinal round, where they lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to Duluth, Ga., Junior Thrashers – who went on to win the tournament.

The weekend was highlighted with great goaltending by Mitch McNeely and Michael Donnelly (who logged his first shutout )

The goals were scored by Wyatt Chance, Conrad Black, Nick Morris, Nick Walker and Aubry Bly.

We’re very proud of all the other boys, including Josh Cogswell, Sean McDonald, Brian Duffy, Nick Bussius and Alex Serrao who skated short all weekend due to sickness and injuries against teams with 18 skaters.

Golden Puck results

January 19, 2010

I’m back from vacation, so let’s get caught up.

First on the docket today are results from the Cape Fear Youth Hockey Association’s entries in the 2010 Golden Puck Tournament…

Day 1 – Our Squirt team (9 and 10 year olds) lost their first game, 4-1 to Winston Salem. Our Pee Wee team (11 and 12 year olds) were victorious in their first contest of the weekend, 7-1 over the Junior Pirates. The Bantam team (13 and 14 year olds) is currently on the ice, skating against the Junior Thrashers. Game time was 9:15 p.m.

Day 2 – A roller-coaster ride of emotions best describes Cape Fear Youth Hockey’s second day of the 2010 Golden Puck Tournament. Game play started early as the Squirt team (9 and 10 year olds) started the day at 5:45, and taking a 9-0 victory over the Charlotte Flames. That is where the twist, turns, and gut-churning cork screws that is the ride knnown as youth hockey began.

The Mite team (7 and 8 year olds) took on a familiar foe in their second game of the tournament, taking on Carolinas Hockey League rival, the Charleston Stingrays. the Rays took a 1-0 lead to the 3rd period, when Fireantz finally came to life and scored three unanswered to go up 3-1. However, the Rays would score 2 goals in the final minute of the game, pulling their goal tender for a man-advantage, storming back to claim a 3-3 tie.

Later in the day, our Pee Wee (11 and 12 year olds) and Bantam (13 and 14 year olds) teams took the ice with eerily similar results. The Pee Wee team scored their second victory of the tournament, and are poised for a great third day on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Bantams took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd Period, only to give up 3 goals and take a 3-2 loss.

Overall, the association is a combined 3-4-1 through the first two days. All the teams have had their chances to take a win in each of their games, just to have the puck bounce the wrong way.

The schedule for Day 3 has the Mites taking on the Jacksonville Barracudas at 6:15 a.m.; the Squirts play the Charleston StingRays at 10:00 a.m.; The Pee Wees tackle Winston Salem at 1:00 p.m.; and The Bantams end the association’s day at 4:45 p.m., also against the StingRays.

Cape Fear Youth Hockey Association update

November 23, 2009

From our friend J. Freeman…

Saturday turned out to be a huge day for the teams of the Cape Fear Youth Hockey Association. Four teams were in action – the Mites (7 and 8 year olds) were down in Charleston, S.C., for athe first of three weekend games; the Squirts (9-10) were in Greensboro to take on the Stars; the Bantams (13-14) travelled to Winston-Salem to battle the Hampton Roads (VA) Whalers; and the High School team (U-16) made the trip up I-95 to take on Broughton High School.
Three teams have scored victories on this action-packed day. The Mites took down the Charlotte Checkers in a rout, 15-1. Scoring came early and often after the first goal was netted early in the 1st period. Several players had multiple points  (goals and assists) when it was all said and done. Forward Chase Wendolek netted a hat trick, while goalie Logan Brodsky came just minutes away from a shut-out.

More on the Jr. Fire Antz

June 29, 2009

I asked for the team roster, so I could get the team in the paper for their gold medal-winning effort in the State Games recently.

Instead, J. Freeman comes through with a treasure trove of information.

Here is that roster…

The team members are: Kneeling, left to right, Hunter Phillips, Conrad Black, Mitchell McNeely, Evan Hutcheson and Dylan Mead. Middle row, CJ McKinley, Brian Duffy and Daniel Kaminski. Standing/back row, Brenden Atherton, Evan Greenhaw, Alex McLamb, Geno Luongo, Noah Allen and Nick Busiuss. Coaches, left to right, Dan Weaver, Chris McKinley (head coach) and Greg Hutcheson.

In addition, the Freemans added this note:

“We also had two other teams in the State Games. Our Bantam team (13 and 14 year olds) finished 4th in their group. We also had two Mite players (7 and 8 year olds: Nolan Tabraham and Ryan Hutcheson) combine with several players from Winston-Salem to earn a silver medal! Overall, a great weekend for association!”

Cape Fear Youth Hockey squad wins state games title

June 25, 2009

Cape Fear Pee Wee Junior FireAntz

Thanks to J. Freeman for sending this in…

The Cape Fear Youth Hockey Pee Wee Jr. FireAntz team won the gold medal at the State Games held in Charlotte on June 19-21.

The action-packed weekend ended with the Jr. FireAntz down 1-0 against their regular season CHL rivals, the Charlotte Flames in the medal round.

The Antz swept the series with four wins going into the finals on Sunday night. Despite being down in the first two periods of the final game, a dramatic goal in the third period tied up the score 1-1 .

Amazingly, with two players in the penalty box, the Antz held Charlotte scoreless in the final minute of the game forcing a nail-biting, heart stopping shootout and the Antz came out with the win and the GOLD Medal!

Congrats to the Pee Wee players, their head coach Chris McKinley and his coaching staff. It was an amazing way to end the season.
