Winter Softball Clinic

December 21, 2009

From our friend at Campbell…

Campbell University will offer a winter softball clinic for girls in the local community. The clinic, open to girls ages 8-18, will be held Saturday, Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Willard Harris hitting facility on the Buies Creek campus.

The event will consist of three sessions: a defensive clinic, hitting clinic and pitching clinic, grouped by age. Participants can take part in one, two or all three sessions. Girls will get the chance to meet the Campbell players and learn new skills from the college team.

This is a great way to kick start a softball player’s 2010 season with instruction that will help build her confidence and understanding in the game.

To register, go to and click on “Camps”. The cost is $35-$50 per session.

Spring Lake making switch to Little League

November 9, 2009

From our friend Kenneth Metcalf…

These are exciting times for Spring Lake Youth Baseball and Softball. The Recreation Department is switching to “Little League Baseball,” the world authority on youth sports. The process for switching has already begun and now we need your help.

Little League requires the involvement of the entire community in order to produce the best possible league for the kids. Our department in conjuction with our Recreation Advisory Board is in full agreement with this philosophy.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the clock is ticking toward our beginning of registration (January….forms mailed in December)….We now require your immediate help in getting this off the ground.

Our initial meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Community Center. If you plan on coaching in 2010 or if you are interested in having your son/daughter in our program – or even just an interested citizen, this meeting will benefit you.

Hope Mills Ponytails fall in heartbreaker

July 16, 2009

Hope Mills’ Ponytails All-Star team faced a daunting task yesterday in Wilmington.

All they had to do to win Hope Mills’ first-ever state softball crown was defeat Montgomery County, a team that edged them by a run earlier in the tournament, in two consecutive games.

They were hoping for 12 innings of softball, or two six-inning victories.

What they got instead was a 4-3 loss in 11 innings.

So a solid run in the state tournament ended with a pair of one-run losses to the eventual state champions, one of them in five extra innings.

Hats off to them for a fine effort.

Softball update

July 15, 2009

Thanks to Maxey Dove for the heads up on the Ponytails situation this morning…

Dixie Softball
(State tournaments held in Wilmington)

Fayetteville South fell to Burgaw on Tuesday, ending their tournament run.

Hope Mills blanked Duplin, 6-0, yesterday. That earned them a shot at the state title tonight against Montgomery County. Hope Mills must win two straight to claim the state championship. Montgomery County edged Hope Mills, 4-3, in the second round.

Good luck, ladies.
