State softball tournament brackets

The official brackets for the upcoming state Dixie Softball tournaments in Wilmington are out.

The Fayetteville South All-Stars will represent District 6 in the Angels division, while Hope Mills will carry the mantle for the district in Ponytails, Belles and Darlings.

Good luck in Wilmington, ladies.

Rangers notch tournament win

The N.C. Rangers recently played in and won the Fayetteville NIT Baseball Tournament, sponsored by USSSA/squeezeplaybaseball.com, on March 21-22.

Dogwood Festival Tennis Tournament

This came in late yesterday. If I didn’t have a USTA event that weekend, I’d be playing for sure…

Men and women tennis players are invited to participate in the Dogwood Festival Tennis Tournament April 24-26 at Mazarick Park in Fayetteville.

Events include: Men’s Open, Ladies Open, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Play begins on April 24 with food served on April 25. The finals will be held on Sunday, April 26.

The cost to enter is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles. Register at your local Fayetteville-Cumberland recreation center or call Ted at 433-1576.

Want to be a wrestling All-American?

YOU ARE INVITED TO COMPETE FOR A POSITION ON TEAM ALL AMERICAN

Team All American is a tri-county team that will compete at the Snakebite National Duals on May 2-3 in Fayetteville. Wrestlers from Hoke, Harnett, and Cumberland County are invited to compete for a position on the middle school team or the high school team.

Tryouts will be on March 22 at 1 p.m. at Jack Britt High School. You must be within three pounds of the weight class you are competing for on March 22. If there is enough interest we will fill a Red and a Blue team for MS and HS. You must have a USA card to compete in the tryouts and the Snakebite National Duals. Entry fee for the tryouts is $10.

In addition, coaches interested in coaching Team All American should call or email Marty Bartram.

Middle School Dual Team Roster Information

The weight classes for the event are: 77, 84, 91, 98, 105, 112, 120, 128, 136, 144, 152, 160, 175, 190, 210, and HWT. Tenths will be dropped at weigh-ins to accommodate scale differences. Competitors must have been born in 1994 or after, AND be enrolled in middle school (or junior high), 6th through 8th Grade. Each Participant should bring proof of age and grade with them to the event. A team shall consist of up to: 16 weight classes, 4 alternates, and 1 table worker.

High School Dual Team Roster Information

The weight classes for the event are: 98, 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, and HWT. Tenths will be dropped at weigh-ins to accommodate scale differences. Competitors must be enrolled in high school and not be over 19 years of age on the day of the tournament. Each Participant should bring proof of age and grade with them to the event. A team shall consist of up to: 15 weight classes, 4 alternates, and 1 table worker.

The news from Southport

July 24, 2008

UPDATED (1:10 p.m.)

Hope Mills’ run though the Dixie Boys and Dixie Junior Boys tournaments has come to an end.

The junior boys knocked off Brunswick, 8-4, on Wednesday, setting up another game today. Brunswick County won that game, 13-7, and will face Columbus County for the state title.

The Hope Mills Dixie Boys lost in the Bracket A title game on Wednesday, 11-4, to Columbus County.

Maxie Dove called this morning with the latest from the Dixie Boys and Dixie Junior Boys events in Southport.

Brandon Quick tossed a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win for Hope Mills over Stanley. The win avenges an earlier loss.

It also sets up a game at 5 against either Columbus or Clinton for the bracket championship.

The Junior Boys face Brunswick at 2:30 today, hoping to fare better than they did in a 21-7 defeat earlier in the tournament.
