Rhino Wrestling Club update

March 24, 2010

From our friend Marty Bartram…

Another fantastic weekend for the Rhinos; Jared represented at the Wounded Warrior Project charity tournament in Cameron, placing third place in a bracket filled with state champions, state placers, and state qualifiers. The Wounded Warrior Project charity tournament donated over $4000 for the cause.

We appreciate the efforts of the Union Pines High School wrestling team and Coach Ragsdale for hosting this event for a phenomenal cause. Coach Ragsdale intends to host the event twice a year, September and March. The Rhinos will continue to try and support this worthwhile event.

While Jared was in Cameron, the rest of the Herd was at the Greenville Open in, Greenville, of course. Here are the detailed results from the Herd’s efforts in the Greco and Freestyle Divisions. Three Rhinos wrestled up an age group to increase their level of competition: Sam, Alex, and Mason.

The North Carolina Top 50 Challenge is in full swing. Two of the wrestling tournaments in the series are complete and are followed by the Top Dawg Challenge on March 13 and the Greenville Open on March 20. Tournaments in April and May will complete the series.

Currently seven Rhino wrestlers are ranked in the Top 50. Samuel Bartram is tied for 3rd; Brad Wanovich is tied for 20th; Aubry Blad, Alex Calonje, and Daniel Lejeune are tied for 27th; Andrew Wanovich is 41st, and Mason Naphy is tied for 44th. Keep up the good work guys and congratulations.

Rhinos have busy weekend

January 19, 2010

From our friend Marty Bartram…

Saturday

Several members of the Rhino Wrestling Club competed for the N.C. All Stars, our state’s national folkstyle dual team at the Hurricane Middle School Duals in Mebane. Andrew Wanovich, Brad Wanovich, Alex Calonje and Samuel Bartram are all team members. Samuel Bartram was out sick and did not compete. The N.C. All Stars won their pool, going 3-0 against a Christiansburg, Va., team, Falcons Wrestling (N.C.), and the Triangle Wrestling Union (N.C.). In the championship pool the N.C. All Stars went 2-1 beating the Iredell Rattlers (N.C.), Team Cabarrus (N.C.), and losing to Team eXtreme. Team eXtreme hosted some of the nation’s top wrestlers including some from Texas, Michigan, Virginia, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Sunday

Team Rhino hosted an elementary dual team at the Hurricane Elementary Duals in Mebane. Five Rhinos, Kyle Cunningham, Kevin Wanovich, Jakob Kirk, Diego Calonje and Brad Wanovich competed on Team Rhino while wrestlers from Virginia and North Carolina joined the team to fill in empty weight classes. With forfeits at 8 of the 17 weight classes, Team Rhino did not go into the competition with an expectation of winning a single dual and so were not disappointed to finish the day 0-4. The Team Rhino wrestlers that competed were very happy to compete against some very good competition in a dual meet format which is atypical for elementary aged events.

Monday

Three Rhinos journeyed to Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winton Salem to compete in the 6th, 7th / 8th, 9th / 10th Grade Open State Championships. All three wrestled very well throughout the day. Bradley Wanovich competed in the 6th Grade 83 lb division. Brad received a bye to the semi-finals where he pinned his opponent. He won the Championship with a score of 12-2 in the final match. Andrew Wanovich competed in the 7th / 8th 83 lb division and pinned four consecutive opponents to reach the finals. Andrew was unfortunately disqualified in the first period after his opponent was injured and could not continue, making Andrew the Runner-up. Alex Calonje competed at 7th / 8th 103 lb division and finished 3-2 for the day in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament. Alex’s final loss was in the consolation quarter-finals.

Overall it was a great weekend of wrestling and we are looking forward to hosting the toughest wrestling tournament in the state, the Rhino eXtreme on Jan. 30 in the Crown Arena.
